Barrio de Santiago, Mérida: the Complete Guide to Your Stay at Casa Zunum

Casa Zunum sits in Barrio de Santiago, one of downtown Mérida’s traditional neighborhoods, with cobblestone streets, restored colonial houses, and a much quieter pace than the city’s more touristic areas. If you’re staying with us, here’s the guide we wish we’d had the first time we came.

Parque de Santiago, the heart of the neighborhood
A short walk from Casa Zunum is Parque de Santiago, with its 16th-century church and benches always occupied by neighbors. Every Tuesday at 8:00 pm, the Remembranzas Musicales take place — a live-music tradition (boleros, danzón, and Yucatecan trova) that brings together locals and visitors in the park. If your stay overlaps with a Tuesday, it’s well worth it.

Where to eat and go out near Casa Zunum
The neighborhood has restaurants and bars within walking distance: La Negrita (live music, Cuban son on Fridays), Mercado 60 (a wide variety of food and salsa music on Fridays from 8:30 pm), and El Pipiripau (live music Thursday through Sunday from 8 pm) are all just minutes away on foot.

Why stay in Santiago instead of downtown
Santiago keeps Mérida’s residential, colonial character without the noise and foot traffic of the Centro or Paseo de Montejo. You’re still a short walk or quick taxi ride from the city’s main attractions, but your nights are much quieter.
